The Darwaza gas crater was formed in 1971 when the Soviets were drilling in the Karakum Desert for natural gas. The area collapsed in, and the gas was escaping. They set it on fire, hoping it would burn off the dangerous gases in a few days, but it is still burning today, in 2012. There have been suggestions the government will put the fire out by partially filling the crater, but it has not happened yet. Because it is a popular tourist destination in Turkmenistan, it seems unlikely to happen any time soon. Visitors can stand near the crater but must camp a bit away to avoid inhaling too much of the fumes. Visitors normally arrive late afternoon, when the crater looks almost like nothing, and watch as it transforms at nightfall.

'Vrata do pakla'

Ovo užareno grotlo nalazi se u srcu pustinje Karakum u Turkmenistanu. Naime, sovjetski su geolozi 1971. godine bušili spilju ispunjenu prirodnim plinom. No, tlo se ispod bušilice urušilo ostavljajući rupu promjera 70 metara.

A photographer was confronted with an amazing inferno as he visited a gas crater which locals call 'The Gates of Hell' - because it has been burning for 46 years. British snapper Alec Connah travelled to the Kara Kum Desert in Turkmenistan, 186 miles from capital city Ashkabat, to witness the extraordinary phenomenon, caused when drillers ignited natural gas in 1971.

A drilling rig crashed into the crater and workers chose to ignite the gas after they were concerned that poisonous fumes might be released into the nearby village of Darvaza. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.

- (PICTURED: George Kourounis, dressed in a heat-resistant aluminium suit, tests the temperatures at the edge of the Darvaza flaming gas crater.) - A man who became the first person to descend into HELL has released these spectacular images of his fiery journey. World-renowned explorer George Kourounis, 44, was part of the first-ever expedition into Turkmenistans flame pit dubbed the Door to Hell. He braved temperatures in excess of 1,000C to rappel almost 100ft into the flame-filled crater before walking across the surface of the remote location. The bizarre landmark - officially called The Darvaza Crater - has been alight for more than 40 years after a drilling accident caused Soviet scientists to set it on fire to burn off excess gas., Image: 242555206, License: Rights-managed, Restrictions: , Model Release: no, Credit line: Profimedia, Caters News
